  • Yeah, that's what was needed. There will still be people who pick holes in it, but for those people there's nothing he could do to remedy the situation.

For everyone else, a dose of sincerity and introspection and a mea culpa is the best way.

Very considered and mature video that was released a few hours ago. I suspect that will put things to bed.

Sorry, but that was really vomit-worthy. He pays the victim card to a tee: "sad ", "powerless", "vulnerable", "scared"...

More like the incident led him to show his true self, beyond the carefully-cultivated public image that he uses to flog stuff via YouTube videos ( "arrogant", "egocentric", "full of myself" and having an acute awareness of his huge "online power') and now, having no other choice, he is having to play the old 'reputation management' game.

As Bart might have put it, "You just bought another load of crap from the world's fattest fertilizer salesman."

    Oh, look :D

Some people are just utterly relentless. Let it go ffs. Those people for whom nothing he says or does is correct enough for exactly how they demand he act can do one.

In lieu of me making a video listing everything I take issue with about how you purport yourselves online, please just know that
It's just excruciatingly embarrassing now and you are starting to come over as a bit unhinged.

Yes that's all very well and good but how can we make sure that someone who did something we don't like never works again and can't support their family? Get with the programme…...

The whole cancel culture thing could be fascinating from a psychological standpoint, I hope someone very knowledgeable writes a good book about it.

I quite like Rob, but I'm finding it really hard to forgive him.

I mean, those dreads back in the day really were a travesty.

    Laugh, love, live, learn.

  • As a Micro YouTuber who specialises in niche guitar subject matter (luthier-built acoustics) it can be very tempting to buy into some of the tropes that have already been mentioned in this thread. The "Brand Tie-ins", "crossover episodes" thing has been pretty much done to death though as it is so often the same personalities regurgitating the same opinions with precious little original thought to share.

An apology video can really help spike your analytics though, I suppose an apology to the apology video is only going to compound that!

For the record, I have no desire to see 'The Monkey Lord' 'cancelled', and have only made one comment about this whole affair in this (so far) 7-page thread. Doesn't mean to say that my observations are not valid though....

Seriously, who genuinely gives a shit? It’s like analysing and commenting on an emmerdale plot.

Let's face it, anyone over the age of 5 that refers to themselves as "the monkey lord" is a knob. If you're over 5 and find that stuff amusing, it's probably why you have no mates.

Let's just move on. We'll probably only have a few months left before we're all dead from Coronavirus. Might as well focus our energies elsewhere.

Hopefully, the whole thing can be put to bed now that Rob has conceded into making a sort-of apology video. I must admit that the entire ordeal became, at the very least, somewhat interesting - rarely does a guitar YouTuber allow their ugly personality traits to make it into their content. Shaping and controlling their public image, and how they come across to the common man is one of the most important catalysts to their success. Rob will do well to remember that in the future.

It's been out a few years now, but Jon Ronson's 'So You've Been Publicly Shamed' has only become more relevant since it was published.

But it's not, because it's (for the most part) Real Life Stuff That Happened. I'll be honest, when it all kicked off with lank-haired Irish kid's video I rolled my eyes so hard I could see my brain, but I think it became a much more interesting situation once Riff City became involved. That's when it stopped being gossip and hearsay.

Businesses shit on each other all day every day. Much ado about nothing in this case as it’s a small business over promoting himself/themselves with a few white lies. Hardly anything surprising imho & I knew the bloke was Not my cup of tea when he first said greetings and called himself the monkey lord.

In a world of Brexit, Coronavirus, Harvey Weinstein, grooming and abuse etc. this really isn’t a big deal.

After a few years, many of the familiar YouTube guitar channels have become a bit repetitive. Probably says more about me than them, but they don’t grab my attention so much anymore.

As an aside, Riff City surely has to be one of the most myopic and short-sighted business ventures in this industry.

They should bring back albums and bands, it used to be a good format for showcasing guitars and stuff.
If we are not ashamed to think it, we should not be ashamed to say it.
