  • I haven't read either book, and have the extended blurays of LOTR and so far have watched only the first Hobbit. I liked it, but not as much as LOTR. It felt a little slow, whereas LOTR actually flows better in the longer versions. Haven't seen the second one yet but have it downloaded, theoretically in time to catch up and see the last one in the cinema, but unlikely to have time before it's finished its run.
Ditto. I've not read the books so I don't have a pre conception of what the film should be like. That said, I love the films. All of them. I actually wish they were longer.

  • Mrs NtDJ was out last night, so I dug out a few DVDs she doesn't like (no, not "those" ones ;-) )

Anyway, Neil Marshall's flawed epic "Doomsday" was my choice for the evening.

I flipping love that film, so funny, so many influences from other films he's chucked into the pot....just a great big piece of fun cinema from a director who loves films (with a fair bit of blood splattering violence and cannibalism).

In other (related) news, I saw the trailer for the new Mad Max (Fury Road)...that looks great!

    The Hobbit 3

Not as good as 2 but OK ,  left feeling a little underwhelmed.Considering its called the Battle of the five armies the battles in LOTR 2 and 3 were much bigger and more epic.
Not as good as 2...wow, it must be really disappointing then!

Really enjoyed 2 , Saw in HFR 3D which added to the experience and worked well. Watched it again at home it was like watching a different film..

Part of my problem is I've read the books, and I can't unread them when I watch the films (I really don't mind the LoTR films, but the Hobbit films have just had too much unnecessary messing with IMO that just doesn't help the story)

The escape in the barrels scene was just too much for me to not be pulled out of the movie...that's a great sequence in the book, and really didn't need a superimposed long running fight scene to be chucked on top of it.

Still I'll go and watch the new one....I'm looking forward to seeing a few more sequences of the heroes running over stone bridges and walkways that are failing down...please tell me there are sequences where the heroes run over bridges that are failing down, Peter Jackson and his techno boffins are great at sequences where the heroes have to run over bridges that are failing down.

my fave bit of the films that's not in the books is the love interest twixt the elf and the dwarf (can't recall the names). I'm loving a sub plot so clearly inspired by Snow White and the 7 Perverts.

I hope they make a film dedicated entirely to 'Scrat' from Ice-Age. He is the new Wile E Coyote.

I can assure you that just such a sequence can be found in the third film - your running over bridges that are falling down needs should be satisfied.

    Fury.
Started out great, gritty, dark, realistically depicting the horror and futility of the final push into Berlin, with a few great sequences.

However, that all led up to a frankly bizarre finale battle which just went completely Hollywood. You don't know why they're doing it, you don't know why the Germans are so stupid, you don't know why the things that worked quite well in the hands of teens at destroying tank crews earlier in the film suddenly don't seem to work all when the SS get a hold of them or why they take so long to use them. You can't even really follow the passage of time, it's almost Michael Bay esque.
    A real shame.

Indeed.  Although, in a break with tradition, he hasn't got the 'this will be in the video game' move.

I have watched it now. I don't think its a spoiler to say it was dedicated to Frank Sidebottom and that acknowledgement was pleasing to me. It is a film about being in a band to some degree, artistic integrity versus being popular and also about mental illness. Quite funny but also rather sad. Made MrsTheWeary feel physically sick :-&

Gran Torino. Erm ,not good. I normally like Clint, think he's a fine actor and fine director (watched space cowboys before that, hokum but good fun) but Gran Torino was not good. I should've liked it (the whole lone vigilante taking on a gang thing), my kind of film, but the whole teaching that boy to be a man thing was complete nonsense (the scene where he teaches him how men talk was cringeworthy), guess I'm just glad they cut the scene where he teaches him to masturbate to porn mags. Poor effort all round.

Hobbit 3. Oh dear, mediocre Mr Jackson. 4/10 must do better.

Firstly, it's been a year since the last one was out, so maybe a recap might have been a good idea? But no, let's just jump straight in (and I'd forgotten who a lot of the characters were, so I was floundering for quite a while). And who decided where to put the break at the point between parts 2 & 3? Incredibly clumsy to do it like this.

Secondly, there's no empathy or connection built with any of the characters and the audience. I didn't give a toss frankly who lived or died.

The battle scenes were ok though.

Fury : Brad Pitt commands a sherman tank in Germany fighting what's left of the Nazi forces. Some of the plot is nicked from Saving Private Ryan, a lot of it is predictable. On the whole not brilliant

St Vincent : Bill Murray is excellent as hard drinking, gambling and  whoring Vincent who earns extra babysitting the kid next door. I liked it
