Also why do ITV and/or ITV2 show it at least once every couple of weeks?

I watched about ten minutes of 'Gambit' last night - the 2012 remake - I've never seen the 1966 original. Even the fact that it has both Alan Rickman and Colin Firth in it could not interest my Mrs, which is saying something. I mentioned that the original film had Michael Caine in the Colin Firth part, and she replied… "it would be better with Michael Caine", which is as conclusive as it gets! End of discussion. Went to bed.

I couldn't get interested in that either. Ended up flicking between that, MOTD and Chuck and Larry. Alan Rickman playing Alan Rickman meh. :(

    Because Jessica Biel.

I also watched the Gambit remake last night, and thought it was, as the lead character would say, "insufferable".

    Whiplash

The story of an ambitious jazz drummer in a top music school

I enjoyed it because I understood the lingo and the drumming but it's gotta be hard going for the non muso.

On TV last night... still absolutely mind-blowing.

    10/10

I recorded it. Looking forward to settling down to it later this afternoon.

There were some choice lines, and the stuff with the dwarf was great. It wasn't bad, I guess just after hearing from loads of people that it was great, I was expecting too much.

the illustrated man from 1969, with rod steiger

have vague memory of watching it on late night tv as a child, and finding it incomprehensible
so finally got to rewatch it and yep, i was right first time
i do like sf films of that era though, so worth watching for the general feel, design, music etc

    Birdman

I actually watched it last week before it was cool ;)

I liked it a lot. Keaton is excellent and Ed Norton is excellent, both as you'd expect. Not quite a classic for me though. Suspect it's done well at the oscars partly because there are a lot of hollywood types voting who can see a lot of truth in it...

No doubt that the style is fantastic though, and the mega-long shots must've been a nightmare to get right.

    Could be.

When I first saw it, it was only because a mate said they were going on holiday to Bruges because they liked the look of the location in the film!

I didn't even know the plot.

Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Not as good as the first one but not at all bad. Plenty of laughs. Trouble is the film doesn't really know what it wants to be - one moment it's playing for laughs, the next it's getting all deep and meaningful about old age and death. Still, I was entertained.

Twelve Years a Slave. Good film and kept me hooked. Bit brutal though.
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

    The Imitation game

Based on Turing's effort at Bletchley  to crack the Nazi Enigma code. Good film but a huge dose of artistic license for dramatic effect spoiled it a bit

The Maze Runner. I find these films that don't conclude, just set up the next instalment very frustrating. However, as teen flicks go I found it engaging and nicely paced.
Then watched Cuban Fury ( is that right?) on 4, I'd expected something a bit swearier but it's a fairly gentle Sunday tea time sort of film.

We watched that too. Thought it was pretty good if a bit predictable. Liked the camp character and the little cameo from Simon Pegg.

Also finally got round to watching Syriana. I didn't like it. :-S

Started watching Serenity, science fiction film by Joss Whedon of Avengers fame. Good reviews on imdb and rotten tomatoes but I turned it off halfway through. Crap actors, characters were weak and generic, no idea what got it such good reviews but based on the first hour it gets a big fat raspberry from me
    Nobody is guaranteed tomorrow.....
