The problem is that every generation is the most progressive, modern generation ever, and what was rebellious and “just a load of noise” to the current generation and its previous one. Is the next generations dad rock.

  • The Pixies is the only one on the list I actually like, but The National is the only one I’ve seen live.
I'll get a round to buying a 'real' guitar one day.

Well, I've heard of all of them.  Apart from The New Pornographers and The Mountain Goats (I have heard of mountain goats but I don't suppose that counts).  But I haven't actually listened to many of them.

As I'm sure others have said, to me these are new bands.  I must listen to sad grandad bands.

An alarming number of those bands are what the cool kids were into when I was rapidly become neither cool, nor a kid.

All those people saying "I've not heard of ANY of them except REM" ... really?

Well, I've heard of most of them because I'm not lying to people on the internet to seem cooler.  However the only 2 I actively like are Pearl Jam and Pixies. Sadly both associated descriptions are ... quite accurate.

Yes, however I think I’m the complete opposite of cool, just absolutely obsessive about the music I like.  Since about 92 until recently I pretty much listened to jazz from 1920s to about 1970 with some exceptions.

I listened to some interesting rock/pop guitarists but I’ve always enjoyed the music that speaks to me and piques my attention.

Pavement, The War on Drugs, Wilco and Father JM all brilliant, proud to be a sad dad if that qualifies

I'm astonished that some people on a guitar forum are still claiming never to have heard of REM, Pearl Jam or Pixies.

Some of the rest I can understand, but these are almost all names that have been at the top of the the "muso" press for decades - they were new and cool when I was at high school and that was a loooong time ago.

So, essentially the author is slating older people for liking bands that have been around for a while.

I like REM, Pavement and Pixies, and the descriptions are not a million miles away. I either don't know or don't like the other bands, and the descriptions are nowhere near me, so it's not too bad. But, the only real sad dads are the ones who get worked up by a tongue in cheek article.

That would only be true, I imagine, if you'd heard of newer, hipper bands.  If you're congratulating yourself on never having heard of The War on Drugs but you're listening to Neil Sedaka or Freddie and the Dreamers, you may still be sad...

I've never willingly listened to any of them.

In fact I haven't heard of at least half of them.

Obviously I know who REM are, and they are awful.
I think this means that we (I'm in the same boat) are the Dads of these Dads that this is about

I had a feeling as I was clicking it that Pearl Jam would be in there, and there was no getting away scot-free for me.

    Made me chuckle anyway. :)

  • In fairness the only one of those I really like is Bright Eyes, and their description is pretty spot on for me! I don't make pesto but I do make a lot of foods that I dislike and quite enjoy the process as long as I don't have to eat them. I'm also a miserable depressive as alluded to in the description  ;)

Bright Eyes are really great though, I don't care if that makes me sad. I'm not a dad yet though
Please note my communication is not very good, so please be patient with me

    Rather US-centric isn't it?

Either way, the Simpsons summed it all up best many years ago...
