I clicked on this, thinking that it would be about people who are in Sad Dad bands (amongst whose shameful number I must count myself). And then discovered that as the only band in the list I really like is Pixies, I work in IT -- which would come as a shock to my university. They were bang on about me having got sick of IPA, though...

  • I mean I thought the article was funny as fuck, I'm just in disbelief that guitarists are claiming they've never heard of Pearl Jam :-D

I havn't heard of a single one of them except REM but I've never listened to them.
Not even Pearl Jam or Pixies?

I mean I totally get that not everybody likes the same music but none of the bands in that link are remotely obscure. Mainstream music press efforts, the lot of them. I'm genuinely surprised that anyone on a guitar forum hasn't heard of nearly all of them.
REM and Pearl Jam are the only two Ive heard of, or at least remember hearing of

EDIT,  counting crows,  Ive heard of them, not sure Ive heard them tho - well not knowingly

I know (and like) Wilco, REM, Pixies, Pearl Jam, Counting Crows.  I've heard of Pavement, Father JM, Arcade Fire, WOD.  Haven't heard of the others.  Not quite sure where that leaves me in the Sad Dad stakes...

In fairness the only one of those I really like is Bright Eyes, and their description is pretty spot on for me! I don't make pesto but I do make a lot of foods that I dislike and quite enjoy the process as long as I don't have to eat them. I'm also a miserable depressive as alluded to in the description  ;)

Bright Eyes are really great though, I don't care if that makes me sad. I'm not a dad yet though

If anyone I know does make their own pesto or have a favourite brand of socks they've done well to hide it.

I skipped straight past Bright Eyes, so there's a third one I've never heard of.... except for the song by Art Garfunkel.

Ah, if that's what it is then it's definitely not for me!

When I see the word "Americana" I immediately think of dust, dried-up wells, creaking porch swings, banjos, fiddles and somebody making horrible squealy noises with a violin bow and a saw.

Yes there's elements of that in it but they were quite experimental at times.

    One of their straighter songs

One of their usual sounding songs:

And one of their more experimental sounding ones:

I genuinely cannot name a song by Pearl Jam or the Pixies but I have heard of them.

REM - it's the end of the world (I'd probably recognise his whining voice on others)

As for the rest. Not a scooby.
