Yes there's elements of that in it but they were quite experimental at times.

    One of their straighter songs
[Bright Eyes - Land Locked Blues]

One of their usual sounding songs:
    [Method Acting]

And one of their more experimental sounding ones:
    [Gold Mine Gutted]
... and one of my favourite songs

If that makes me a sad dad, then so be it... my 15-year-old daughter loves them too.

I skipped straight past Bright Eyes, so there's a third one I've never heard of.... except for the song by Art Garfunkel.
In fairness, emo Americana music isn't for everyone
Ah, if that's what it is then it's definitely not for me!

When I see the word "Americana" I immediately think of dust, dried-up wells, creaking porch swings, banjos, fiddles and somebody making horrible squealy noises with a violin bow and a saw.

Oh no, not for me, sorry.... I liked the third one best, if anything.  Their artwork's nice.

I’ve sent the link to my friend who has been trying to get me into the New Pornographers. He is much younger than me and has no kids, so I’m sure he’ll be delighted with the sad dad label.

These are bands that came from the American 'college' scene over the last forty years. If you haven't heard of them in the uk, (which I would really doubt) then fair enough, but you don't need to witheringly wear it like a superior badge of honour.

Of those the only band I particularly like (maybe I’d love the ones I’ve never heard of, who knows) is My Morning Jacket. I probably need to wait for the list of grandad bands.

Anyway, enough of this frivolity it’s eel for lunch…
The only band on this list I have heard of are REM and even then I don't really know their music.

I'll join you waiting for the list grandad bands.  =)

A list of bands I would actively avoid, I never got that sort of "hipster music" when it was big. Needs Neutral Milk Hotel and The Shins adding to it as well for a couple extra shades of shit. Apart from Pearl Jam and Pixies who I don't think really fit into the list.

I am fully aware of both the pixies and pearl jam, but having never liked rather band, I couldn't name a song.

Most of the list is like that, wilco, pavement, arcade fire, all just completely uninteresting for me, so yup, heard of them, couldn't name a song.

Some of you lot are weird. Guitarists and bassists who don't really know these bands, especially ones like REM, The Pixies and Pearl Jam. I think you are making it up. All three have released stock in the canon songs over the years that I would have thought would be on the roster for most of us fret spankers?

    and I like Americana
    I actually like country
    and western

has anyone actually said the dont know / know of REM ? (serious question cos I cant be arsed to check previous) and I'd agree tht it'd be very odd not to have heard / heard of them. I think the big four - REM, Pearl Jam, Counting Crows and Pixies most have heard of, if not got/heard their music - just cos you're a guitar player doesnt mean to have to know / like everything that comes out. I only (knowingly) know REM tracks from that lot. Ive probably heard stuff from the others but it obviously had no lasting impact on me to want and go and listen/buy their choons

why would you doubt ?   why would/should UK guitarist know these unless they follow "american college" bands ?  its not wearing it as a badge of honour, its a response to statements like yours
just because you don't, doesn't mean you can't
just because you do, doesn't mean you should.

I can't name many either but I mean you'd need to be living under a rock not to have heard of them.
They were on the Simpsons, when it was still good!

Pixies were on the soundtrack to one of my favourite films, Grosse Point Blank, so I think it’s the only song of theirs I could name. The soundtrack was mostly 80s nostalgia so why something so very 90s got on there I don’t know.

What do you mean by "on the roster"?

While I agree "canon" songs exist (Imagine / Bo Rap etc etc) I don't think any of those bands get anywhere close. Chart dominance is not the only part (not that I recall any of them other than REM charting in the UK) but it needs to get into other forms of popular culture.

For example - Without 'Independence Day' I doubt I would be able to recognise REM's end of the world song.

In my youth, if it didn't get played on Tommy Vance's Friday Rock Show then I both didn't listen to it, and didn't care I hadn't.
