Exactly the same - "Wear something appropriate for the situation."

    It's not rocket science.
who made you the arbiter of what's "appropriate"? or for that matter who gave the other people the right to make the judgement?

  • Lix, have you been to uni? Go and have a wander around one someday. The Rugby team at my university had an actual bet (according to the one rugby guy on my course, called Podge) on who could wear the t-shirt with the most offensive slogan and survive the day. They were awful t-shirts - just crude, unfunny and alienating to most - but to my knowledge nobody got kicked out. Podge wore one that said 'Prove you're not a prossy and fuck me for nothing' IIRC, or words to that effect. Shit, obviously, but I'd defend their right to wear them. Just as I'd defend a woman's right to wear whatever they like.

FWIW, this was the University of Leeds, sometime between 1999 and 2002.

So, who sets the guidelines as to what is 'appropriate', then?

I like the way that people are all smug and supportive of Zappa appearing in front of Congress to stop people like Al Gore's wife from censoring music.... "it's just words" ... or chuckle as some sixty something dwarf threatens to punch Zappa on a political chat show for daring to say he thought "Hot For Teacher" was a funny video...

That's Zappa he's an established person - people know how to react to him.

SO fast forward 30 years... 3 decades ... 3 f*cking decades ... that's lifetimes... and we land on comet and people get up in arms about a stylized shirt...

Do you know what humanity deserves?

We deserve to be wiped out some time soon by a giant asteroid, and about 10 minutes before it happens some nerds should announce it to the world from their base on Mars.

The internet has allowed wackos a voice and credibility they do not deserve, the pressing need to bleat your opinion is revered, when in fact the ability to express your will on the universe is infinitely more admirable and inspiring.

I think it's time we had a pogram.
A sig-nat-eur? What am I meant to use this for ffs?! Is this thing recording?

The problem, I think, is that an awful lot of society's problems have been basically solved. There is, however, a certain type of person who needs to be able to complain about things to feel important...and as the pool of those "things" gets smaller and smaller, they have to resort to making bigger and bigger issues of ever less-relevant things in order to feel important.

    Have a wisdom ;)

I don't know if it's complaining - as that's a form of helplessness - these people want to rally other people to do stuff.

"I think this is bad - someone (else) should do something while I type angry things into my computer cos I'm too lazy and half-assed to actually take action."

These people have no sense of humour because they can't get a sense of the bigger picture - which is a factor of humour, it shows intellect and the ability to step outside yourself.

The appropriate action would be to buy the guy a cooler shirt.

I'm not entirely sure that's possible, except maybe with the addition of tanks (or perhaps spaceships).

In all the furore, nobody seems to have noticed the impeccably-muscled man on the shirt, with an implausibly shiny package.

It's probably also worth mentioning that because they shout the loudest and have a disproportionate influence, those of us who don't share their view can tend to perceive them in greater numbers than they actually are. In the case of the crazy feminists, it very much seems like they really do represent all people who claim to support feminism...whereas, in reality, an awful lot of people who consider themselves feminists actually have much less crazy views and are willing to listen (and agree) on things like men's rights. They just don't shout very loud because they don't think they need to.

Slightly unfair that as is probably isn't the naivety of the crunch the is the main problem, for plenty of people live sheltered lives, it the preaching of the crunch in their own completely socially inapplicable gospel that is the issue.  It's like when you sit in Starbucks in Wimbledon and you hear rich kids from the village complain about how tough life is because Daddy won't buy them a new Mini and meanwhile if poor people want a better life then they should just work harder.  It's far easier for sheltered people to hold sweeping judgements without any real basis in fact.

If he ever has been to uni then clearly it was after being bundled into the back of a transit van, blindfolded and then driven across a campus at high speed.

I can't believe I've read every post in this.

It seems to me we are not far from attacking the worth of a person and their work because they own a Cypress Hill CD. Because clearly that is racist and sexist.

But owning a Rihanna CD where she asks if the boys are big enough - well, that's fine.

The ESA team should be revered for what they have achieved. I'm actually glad they didn't do the TV slots in suits and white coats, sucking all the fun out of it. The ESA team are so good at what they do because they love it and find it fun. No one works that hard at anything if they don't enjoy it.

I can only hope there is a joint interview with Dr Taylor and whoever it was that started shirtgate.

"Dr Taylor, what did you do this week?"

"Oh, I landed a spacecraft on a comet 300 Million miles away from Earth."

"SJW Representative, what did you do?"

"I complained about the shirt he wore when he told us about it"

The shirt was a fantasy nerd picture. It wasn't like the quickly (and rightly) withdrawn from sale "Rape - it's just a snuggle with a struggle" t-shirt. It wasn't even close.

A quick straw poll of women (all lawyers) I work with resulted in various responses including
     "looks like a tool,"
"I don't care what he wore,"
"can I get that shirt with guys on it,"
"Better that than a One Direction shirt."

Zero condemnation. Zero accusations of sexism - and this from within an industry that is often believed to be very sexist.

Bravo to the entire ESA team for achieving what they did.

And a big fat "get over yourself" to the nobber PR person that forced Taylor onto the TV to apologise for the shirt.

He probably doesn't get out much or mingle with different types of people. I mean amongst his peers, his geeky scientist mates. he's the cool one, the party animal, the class clown, constantly trying to be the centre of attention...but you could only think that this guy is cool if you really are extremely geeky yourself. Look at the tats FFS. >:D<

    :-B Awesome dude!!

What could you take away about the mentality of someone that gets themselves permanently inked with things like that?

Not that I have a problem with him, each to their own, variate is the spice, but at least try not to cry when it backfires.....as it inevitably will.

tattoos are for the person who wants them. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

But that being said, I'm the wrong person to ask. I love my ink.
