I once got thrown by 70s Judo legend Brian Jacks.
I saw Stephen Fry browsing the DVDs in Harrods and, during the same visit, had a slash next to Mike Gatting in the posh loos.
I have had a nice meal with a guy whose brother is the Irish one who used to be the chauffeur in Downton Abbey.
That last one is a bit tenuous I admit.
    :)

I once got to hang out backstage after a Hawkwind gig around 1984... my favourite band at the time. Not half as much fun as I thought it was going to be.
In fact I think the experience is probably almost eclipsed by seeing Rick Wakeman shopping for a new fridge in Harrod's. The posh git.

Clarky… don't go saying you got all his albums… ahhhh you tit.. you gone and done it again.."

Can you imagine the future generation of star struck musicians?

"I've added all your albums to a playlist on You Tube!"
that's as sad as it is funny.. lmao

  • I once walked past someone at the edinburgh festival and thought 'oh she looked like susan boyle'.

Took a couple more steps to realise it was susan herself. I didnt stop to say hello, she looked busy talking to herself.

I see John Terry a fair bit in M&S. Never spoken to him though, but I don't think I'd want to. Used to see Max Clifford in there a fair bit too until he got sent down. Wouldn't want to talk to him either. I've met Lara Latex the porn star a fair few times. My Mrs went to school with her. Nice girl she is too.

I can't help about the shape I'm in, I can't sing I ain't pretty and my legs are thin

But don't ask me what I think of you, I might not give the answer that you want me to

I forgot about the time I went to see a band at Shieldfield Social Club in Newcastle and found myself having a wee next to Brian Johnson, the new bloke out of AC/DC. We ddn't shake hands... in fact there was very little conversation other than a nod and an 'Awlright?'. The etiquette of the Gents'.

We got on the same bus as Bernie Fineman from "Classic Car Rescue". Canterbury Sturry Road Park 'n' Ride, it was. He looked exactly like he did on telly, but he never shouted "Mario!" once. Bit disappointing, really.

David Bowie, when I was about 9 yrs old on a flight to Spain. Flight Attendant suggested I walk to the front and get his autograph. They wouldn't do that these days! Just like they probably wouldn't let you in the cockpit and mess round with buttons, fly the plane etc. as I likely did on the same flight. Remember those days..

Assuming the guy who had met John Lennon doesn't show up, as happened last time this topic was posted, then I have clearly won.

stood next to Martin Carthy in a bar at a gig one time (it was his daughter playing, thinking about it, she came into the bar to say hello (to him, not me) before the gig started), he is quite incredibly short.

Saw Kate Rusby walking around St Albans one time, also before a gig.

I'm not locked in here with you, you are locked in here with me.

  • Brian May... he talked about badgers... a lot...
Nick Mason was a bit of a grumpy git, but some very cool stories about the recording of Dark Side, and quite how improvised the whole thing was!
Held open a door for Patrick Stewart, he didn't even say thank you...
Paul McGann of Doctor Who and Withnail and I fame is an incredible chap- gracious and enthusiastic and had a chat with me about making Withnail. Talking of Withnail, met Richard E. Grant at the stage door of a talk he held, he was very nice too, and didn't mind when I went back for a photo after i'd already walked away with an autograph!

I met the "Golden" Megadeth lineup in 1994, here's my rundown

Dave Mustaine - was expecting him to be a dick, but he couldn't have been nicer, talked about guitars and said i could have his sunburst King V if i could wrestle if from his guitar tech :)
Dave Ellefson - was kind of a dick...
Marty Friedman - I was in total awe, he was amazing live and a really nice guy, he spoke to my mate in Japanese
Nick Menza - just grunted, but seemed alright

Nik Kershaw and Rory MCGrath were both regular customers at a previous employer.

I was walking out one evening, and had just sparked up a smoke (that's how long ago it was) and Rory McGrath walked past to collect his car.......

I bought Michael Palin a pint in the mid eighties. Lovely bloke.

Stood beside Elvis Costello at the back of a Neil Young gig.

Met Clive Barker once - again, lovely bloke.

Spoke to all of the Horslips at an exhibition in Belfast.

Met Steven Gerrard at 2am in Liverpool City Centre after a match v Barcelona. Nice guy and was with Alex. But wouldn't let me take a pic in case Rafa found out.

I'm glad Marty was cool.  I don't really get all hero-worshippy about guitarists but he is someone I hold in high esteem.  Those Megadeth albums he played on are so much better than their other stuff (although the Chris Poland ones are good too).

Claudia Schiffer, Ronald Koeman, Bernie, Paul Reed Smith, Toby Flood, Raymond Kopa (one for the footie die hard) and Vicky Michelle back in 98 (yes I would have tickled the Cougar). Can't say a bad word about any of them!

The original premise of this thread seemed to be about famous people who you happened to bump into, rather than those who you've deliberately set out to meet.

But now we're just into name dropping, I list some of the more notable people I've been a 'Stage Door Johnny' to:

Mark Knopfler - met him on the Love Over Gold and Brothers in Arms tours. He was an utter gentlemen - a great advert for meeting your heroes.

John Martyn - met him on four occasions - three of which were a pleasure. He wasn't very pleasant on the fourth.... I asked him what the weird tuning was he used on his electrics (this was pre-Internet) and he kindly wrote it out on my CD copy of Philentropy and signed it.

Richard Thompson - very quiet but nice enough.

Steve Winwood - pretty much the same as RT.

I went to school with Mick Hucknall. I'll keep my counsel on that....

I went for pints with Ian McLagan after a Billy Bragg gig years back. He was a great guy, my mate asked him for his autograph and then we couldn't get rid of him until kicking out time. Met Richard Whitely once in the street when I was tripping an acid, that was weird. He offered me his autograph but I politely declined. Met Phil Cool when I was tripping too, whilst Ken Casey showed home movies, that was even weirder! I used to share a flat with a couple of guys that put on gigs and met loads of famous and semi-famous people back in the late eighties, Steve Marriott was in the flat once watching Small Faces videos! Met Nico once! Met loads of 'Indie' bands of that era, Shamen, Primal Scream, Loop, BMX Bandits, Pastels, Teenage Fanclub et al. And used to go down to London and stay at Dan Treacy of the Television personalities gaff. Went to see Dr. John with Jowe Head once too. Oh, and Madness were dancing on the bar in my local in Leith a few years back.
