Assuming Dad Rock is the music of the youth of parents of current teenagers the late 80s into the 90s sounds about right. The War on Drugs, for example, according to Wikipedia didn’t form until 2005.
Guitar makes us nostalgic for more guitar friendly eras - even if they happened before we were born. I have a closer relationship with Boomer bands as that's when you could play a 25 minute guitar solo if you wanted. You didn't have to be particularly good either
4 others I recognise the name only.
Yay I win! Not a sad dad.
Does such a thing even exist anymore?
Melody Maker, Sounds and NME have long gone.. .as has Q (and the superb Word) ...so I'm guessing here you mean Uncut and Mojo ? But if you read those then you're dad rock, right? Guitar mags are not mainstream music press - and they sold out to the "man" decades ago !
It's such a strange list... there are genuinely only 4 bands most would be familiar with - REM, Counting Crows, Pearl Jam and the (at a stretch for non-indie personnel) Pixies.

I listen to Pearl Jam but only when they're backing Bernard Shakey.
That being said, the War on Drugs fits into category.

New Fretboard rule 3... Don't remind the members how old they are...
I must like Sad Grandpa Bands.
Quite funny and true though.
EDIT I've been on smack half my life so things are a bit different for me. Still sad and a dad though.
