Many years ago, I dabbled with rack gear. I loved it. Rack gear is inherently cooler than pedals. A mini fridge on wheels with blinking lights clearly whips the posterior of a welded aluminium frame covered in Velcro. My setup is in major transition this year. Right now it doesn't know what it wants to be called so asks that people refer to it as 'they'. So here is they, my current setup and it's rack based...

The rack in question came from Home Bargains. LED lights are a consideration. Pepsi Max is the king of fizzy beverages and I will not trade for Coke. The fabulous Uncle Psychosis built the orange DF-2 clone and I love it to bits. A Mooer Yellow compressor is coming in this week. The Axe One interface arrived last week. I have the Axe Solo and Buffer Boost units and love them but can't access them right now so the Axe One has come in and it really has delivered. The various DI options are as good as the other units and the interface is running perfectly well at 64 samples so latency is not an issue.

The Axe One comes with Tonex SE. After reading so much about Tonex and Tonex One, it seemed silly not to try Tonex SE. The short review: the user interface is a disaster but bloody hell does this thing sound good. I'm using the stock amps, haven't downloaded anything, and I'm pretty sure I'll pick up one of the Amalgam capture packs. After owning various Helix units, Axe FX Ultra, AFX2, FM3, and a load of plugins, Tonex sounds superb and is piss easy to set up. Right now I'm using Tonex SE for amps (no cab) and taking that output into Helix Native for effects, reverbs, and cabinets. I do have Amplitube 5 available but the interface for that is shite and setting things up to play in stereo is so much easier in Native. Output from the interface go to either Adam F5 or Kali IN-5 monitors.

So what's the end plan? A hybrid setup. A few pedals going into an audio interface. Tonex SE as the amp, Helix Native and other plugins for effects, Helix for cabs. Throw in a Morningstar MC6 Pro and I'm done. If I wanted to take everything out of the software realm, then a Tonex One and HX Stomp would do me.

Genuinely happy that DF-2 went to a good home!

A continued simplification process now has me here:

I need to work on my cable management but it does the job. In through the Fat General, drives, and the Carbon Copy, then into the IR-2. Everything else is in the loop of the IR-2 in stereo for the full headphone experience. Out from the IR-2 into my tube combo for when the family is out.

The two utility pedals are for the HX One, and a tap tempo for the RC-5.

I’m on the waiting list for a Kingsley Page, hence the extra space. I imagine the FG and the Page would be “always on”. That begs the question: will I have too many boosts? I could probably then straight up replace the Have Blue or transition from the Dane to a Peacekeeper. I really don’t want to do either.

This is the closest I've been to getting the sounds I have in my head but I'm now contemplating the Friedman IR-D in order to knock off the Plexitone and Belle and possibly the JHS AT. If I do that, MIDI functionality becomes available between IR-D and the Boss EVH which then begs the question, should I also be looking at a MIDI multi-fx to gain overall control of everything and then the QMX could also go??
    If in doubt, do nowt!!

  • The top board is my "small" board that I use at home. The bottom board is my main gigging board that usually lives in my band's rehearsal space as I'm too lazy to take it there and back most weeks!

Your small board is bigger than my big board :)

I have failed in my attempt to leave my board alone for a full year but only because I've simplified it.

Annoyed at having to use the Line Selector, it's only there because I don't trust the microswitch on the DOD Chorus. I hadn't appreciated just how mad the switching on those is.

Haven't put a proper board together for a while, so experimenting with this setup.

Will likely change soon as I think the 'verb is overkill for what I use it for. I recently got the Foxrox flanger so will likely put that on instead of the 'verb and use the amps reverb.

I like the Longsword, but I also recently got the new Condor so thinking of swapping it out for that and I can maybe squeeze another pedal on the front row.

Still learning the Electric Lightning, as said in the manual, the EQ is very powerful and I'm constantly tweaking it. The BC108 Fallout might be my favourite drive pedal out there, and happy with it for my lead or heavier sounds.

There's also a Wahcko but isn't currently hooked up.

I swear I’m done with all this… I don’t gig any more, I don’t have any prospect of gigging. So I’ve taken stock of what’s gone on in the last 15 years and finally made my last board…

in vague order, and leaving out a lot on the way, this is the history… the new permanent board at the end…

    Earliest I have a picture of…

    My first mini board…

    More minis…
    And more…

    Bigger boards again…

    Changes…

    Obsession with Analog Alien…

    Ummm didn’t last long…

    Experiments with control…

    More control…

    Briefly back to minis…

    Then bigger again…

    Then… MIDI…

    Change of control…

And (having left out at least 20 steps that I have pictures of…) this it

Thank you for your indulgence. This is it. No more changes ever.

Signal path - tuner, fuzz (Goliath mk2 tonebender), 1st drive (Hoochee Mamma clone), 2nd drive (PoT), 3rd Drive (Decibelics Golden Horse), MXR phase 95, T Rex Replicator Junior. Power by One Spot Pro CS6, Does what I want, no control and MIDI bollocks…

@downbytheriver 's adventures are a great illustration of why I hate pedalboards and everything about them. All that faff of cables, power supplies, making everything fit, constant changes, etc. I'm not sure if that was the point you were trying to make mind you!

FWIW, my favourite of your boards was the recessed minis. I'm not normally a fan of mini pedals, but those boards solve my problems - I hate their tendency to wobble and the ratio of cabling to pedal annoys me. The recess solves the former and hides the latter!

I’m not sure what my point is either! Perhaps my horror at all the great pedals that have passed through my hands (oh if only this were all the great pedals - there were many, many more) and why on earth did I sell them? Perhaps the fact that it’s clear that I didn’t really know what I wanted to achieve - I look at that first board and know that I would be perfectly happy with that today!

I loved the miniboards and I still have the case and plate so it might yet happen again (as a completely separate and isolated project).

As to fastening mini pedals so that they don’t wobble, chain links is the way

As to cabling, solderless or flat cables are neatest.

    Latest iteration.

Tonex has been great as a direct to FOH unit but also as my acoustic guitar preamp.

Ready for the arrival of the CB Onward (on Monday, hopefully).

It's been quite a while since I played around with these so it'll make a nice change. In front is a Tonex and a Beebo (I've been using it as a tuner mostly, but it does have some great sounds in it too).
