Just defeated Phalanx in Demon's Souls.... by using 'easy mode' and using the Royalty class with the fragrant ring (fnaar).

The first one? I nearly got the next weapon but I keep losing a crap load of blood echoes. I’ve spent a fair amount on skill points. Apparently I’m going strength/skill build?

There are three starter weapons - the cane (skill build), the saw cleaver (probably easy mode) and the hunter's axe (more strength focused). Saw cleaver is nicely balanced.

Cool trick a lot of people don't know when the begin - you can swing the weapon (say, R1 swing) then use the trick weapon transform to do a transform attack. These can be pretty powerful, worth experimenting with. The saw cleaver is great for this, and if you've had a beast blood pellet you'll quickly become quite lethal!

Yea. I saw something about about this. I’m using the extended weapon a lot with larger mobs. Any advice on builds?

  • Yea. I saw something about about this. I’m using the extended weapon a lot with larger mobs. Any advice on builds?

Depends what weapon you have really. If you have the cane, pump into skill and life, and use the gun for visceral attacks. Some larger mobs can be killed by backstabbing (not like dark souls - you need a fully charged R2 attack from behind to stagger, then a second attack to backstab). The piggy in the sewers is a good mob to practise this on.

    Visceral attacks scale with skill.

If you have the saw cleaver you'll want a bit more in strength as well (I think - you can see how weapons scale at the level up screen).

Most of my echoes are spent on health vials and hunters marks!

Don't forget to upgrade the weapon. That boosts damage a fair chunk. If you struggle with dying, pump into life a bit - a few points goes a long way early game.

Last night I found myself watching YouTube Retro Gaming videos, especially the handheld devices.
I blame it on some of the new models taking inspiration from the original Game Boy design! like: https://www.analogue.co/pocket & https://www.goretroid.com/collections/retro-game-system/products/retroid-pocket-2-plus-handheld-retro-gaming-system

    Does anyone here use one?
Not ordered but VERY tempted.  Then when I go to Japan I hit up BookOff and raid their used games section.

Only reason not ordered that is because I have a GBA, DS Lite, 3Ds XL and Switch but don't really play them!  I have seen other forums with people who has them and it's a great little piece of gear.

Very cool piece of hardware though.
Retro Dodo (YouTube) recommends the Anbernic RG351MP as his “Best Retro Handheld of 2021” & says it’s good for people new to the hobby as it comes pre-installed with some games.
But I’m not 100% sure what model to go for…there’s too much choice & I have an urge to get one similar in design to my old GameBoy…silly nostalgia I know.
    I’ll let you know what I go for when I do finally pull the trigger @RaymondLin ;

Is that not an emulator as opposed to "real" hardware of the Pocket Boy?

I guess it's down to whether you just want to dib your toes and try a lot of games or get serious and have lots of money to buy real carts.

I don’t think the Retroid stuff is real hardware @RaymondLin unlike the proper Analogue stuff

I think that is the draw of the Analague Pocket (I called it the Pocket Boy).

    Yes it’s an emulator.

Tbh I’m happy to just dip my toe in atm. If I still had my old gameboy games, then I would have definitely been tempted by the https://www.analogue.co/pocket

Looks tempting but, at that price, I'm just going to wait until I get my Steam Deck.

I have the earlier RG350. Having filled it with all manner of things, I ended up trimming it down to just run NeoGeo and ScummVM games. It packs a punch for its size and will run most retro things well. The only negative is that the UI is a bit finnicky, even using a 3rd party launcher but if you're able to put up with that it'll give you hours of varied retro fun.

The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch. The origin of this nonstandard usage of the term by electric guitarists is attributed to Leo Fender, who also used the term “vibrato” to refer to what is really a tremolo effect.

Really good fun. One of the few games in recent years I actually finishes the story. Just the right length.
