Profanity is the first resort of the ignorant.

You wouldn't get away with wearing such a shirt in a University.

    Therefore, he's an idiot.
My daughter - who started university about 6 weeks ago - laughed at all this crap, saying "Really? That shirt? I saw worse than that on guys and girls in Freshers' Week."

    So no. You're completely wrong.
Ah, when I said "in a University", I meant "in class" rather than "in a bar".

Incorrect again. The intended usage is to convey depth of feeling - usually contempt, disgust or anger - at somebody, something or a circumstance. That's the context here.

Yes. Which is what she's talking about. She was surprised, but - unlike the leading feminists in the world - she just shrugged it off, because it wasn't biased toward either gender, but "people at university".

With respect your daughter's been at Uni for 6 weeks and this is one Uni and one students opinion .. it's hardly a statistical sample. Not being argumentative just objective and balanced.

Remember, it's easier to criticise than create!

Granted - however, saying "you wouldn't get away with it" is somewhat disproved by her experience that lots of people get away with it. If it was just her getting away with it (she doesn't wear that sort of thing, but hypothetically...) then yes...it'd be less significant.

    No, it's still idiocy.

What institution and course is that?

Society has expectations of individuals and how a person presents themselves.  When an individual breaks societies expectations with something unexpected e.g. Dr Matt Taylor wearing a dubious shirt on live TV, its bound to cause a reaction.

He's a Doctor, a scientist, a professional.  I imagine he is well regarded by his peers.  Under the set of circumstance and taking into consideration his attributes, I can't imagine anyone expected him to walk out with tattoo sleeves and THAT shirt.  It no longer matters what he did (help land a robot on a comet); its what he's done to societies expectation of him as an individual (Doctors of any profession DO NOT wear shirts like THAT, especially on TV).  In comparison with an undergraduate who has been at uni for 6 weeks and noticing other students wearing potentially worse shirts during Freshers' week, then I guess that is to be expected.

I admit it was some years since I did 2 science degrees but I certainly don't remember a dress code.

I spent a lot of my 20's and 30's at Uni -  5 times in total...    I've seen "worse" (if you want to add a rating) shirts at all of them...

I remember a girl wearing a WASP t shirt with a fairly graphic image and the slogan "animal - fuck like a beast"  in lectures.
This was ircc the 2nd year of a Physics degree - I don't know what she did after graduating, I suspect she doesn't work for ESA.

I'm not sure where you went to Uni or what you studied so it may have been different.

I think it's an awful shirt and it's not rocket science to expect comments so he should have worn something else in my opinion but heyho - it's his right to look naff.

Women in our culture, in case you haven’t noticed, are routinely reduced to purely sexual beings.

PURELY BECAUSE OF EVIL CUNTS LIKE YOU, YOU STUPID BINT!

Don't get me wrong... I like porn. But I accept it *is* filthy business. Trying to whitewash it like "oh it's good for these reasons and these reasons... but when other people do it, it's BAD MMMKKKAAAYYY??"

    Fuck off with that shit.
Awww, diddums nasty womam actually dare to put together a reasoned, cohesive argument that doesn't fit with your view on the world?*

Right, you'd better swear a lot then because, you know, that's the right thing to do.

    R.

    * I am assuming you have read and understood the article, which I realise might be a bit of a stretch but I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt.
Dude..  This is how I speak, and I type as I speak. I don't sugar coat it. If you're going to have debates or discussions with me, you should really get used to it.

As it happens I DID read the article, and guess what, I disagreed with her viewpoint! Shock horror. She's being a massive hypocrite, one rule for guys.. one rule for women... the very definition of sexism! That is what I was drawing attention to.

Now kindly get the fuck off my dick.

Not only is this a statement that is completely untrue, it's either deliberate misinformation designed to cheaply prove a point or are the words of someone who has no knowledge of university procedures and possibly never even set foot on an actual university campus in the last 30 years.  It is also completely irrelevant to where he works.  No doubt if you attended university dressed as postman Pat it would raise a few eyebrows but that doesn't mean you wouldn't be free to.

From someone who purports to be a socialist warrior for what is right and just it seems bizarre that not only would you twist or not check facts but reference some kind of strict dress code which only the completely ignorant would believe or witness as existing in all but the country's most elitist and supercilious institutions.  Then further by questioning @digitalscream about the whereabouts of his daughter's education you show enormous snobbery in order to prove a point.  It's all very right wing behavior is that.

For clarity a simple check indicates that Dr Matt Taylor attended the University of Liverpool and Imperial College London.  Both of their dress codes are based around one issue which is that all students must be easily identifiable.  Both as you may imagine do have recent insert clauses regarding offensive 'slogans' preaching hate.
