I'll try creosoting my guitar, see if that makes a difference.

  • I've got Fiddes wax with a tint in it. I bet it does the same thing at a fraction of the cost
Could you point us in the direction of the exact one you use please?

    Many thanks

  • I pulled the trigger on a small tub of the wax. I never used lighter fluid to clean a fretboard before. Anything I should be aware of?

Don't light a cigar near it when you are rubbing it in...

    @Fortheloveofguitar ;
I bought a 5 litre tin a few years ago for about 35 quid and still have over half left. Use it for tables and doors etc around the house. Really brings the wood to life. Mine is the stripped pine "colour" so has a slight tint in it. Used it on my Tele that I stripped a few years ago and really brought out the grain:

No doubt the snake oil will do the same just a bit more pricey..

    Day Three

My cat has just confirmed his long term suspicion that I am an idiot who takes pictures of things and posts them on guitar forums. I've just applied a third coat and so this is covered in the 'wax', I'll do this for a few more days and report back my findings sometime next week.

I have buffed off the wax between coats and then reapplied each time, rubbing the wax into the grain each time. In theory, it should get darker after multiple applications.

I use a mix black and dark brown mix leather dye after fine sanding the board.
    2 applications.
leave to dry overnight each time
Then I use tiny tin amounts of Tru-Oil to seal. Rub hard until it's not there.
    leave 24 hours
    Then bore oil.

result is always fab - he'res one I did a couple of weeks ago.

I would say that it is a shade darker at most, but it isn't drastic and so you'd be better off using traditional dyes/stains if you want a much darker look.

  • The wax looks really interesting but I'd be concerned if it left me with a Floyd Rose on a Strat  :o

I use Brandon Bespoke Chopping Board & Butcher's Block Mineral Oil for treating my rosewood 'boards.  250ml cost me £11 - it's the best there is, I'm reliably informed.  Won't necessarily age but it'll certainly protect and preserve.

    This looks the way .
looking at the replys above , 4 coats of the snake oil and it's slighly darker .
Where as 1 coat of black leather dye and boom ! .

I've got the black leather dye to do my Tokai lp custom fretboard but it was how to seal it that has been holding me back , bit worried about black finger ends after playing a few minutes .

Looks like a great result - no idea why someone lol’d your post though, very strange.

What kind of tru-oil and bore oil should you use though? I’ve just had a browse on eBay and there’s a few types available and there doesn’t seem to be much to choose between them apart from the price. Also, I guess if you don’t want quite such a dark, almost black colour you could use just a dark brown leather dye? Cheers.

Edit: do you have a ‘before’ photo so we can see the difference that the process has made?

My method limits the rubbing off on fingers. The Tru-Oil seals in the dye pretty well. The trick is to be patient and let everything dry out fully.
