I spoke to a former coffin maker yesterday who was saying the lead lining makes it fully sealed and being embalmed will keep everything fresh.

The embalming bit is important. Years ago I was told a story by an archaeology lecturer regarding a Crusader burial site of a wealthy person, that had been excavated.
All that remained intact was the lead liner. When one of the members of the dig accidentally pierced the top of the liner, a stream of what the lecturer described as 'corruption' sprayed out & covered the poor bloke.
The lead vessel had effectively become an anaerobic digester...
The unfortunate person was confined to a hospital isolation facility & subjected to a barrage of inoculations for some time due to the risk of dangerous mediaeval bacterial spores being present & still viable. I believe he was OK eventually.
